Review by first time fantasy reader

I have never read a fantasy novel. Every time I tried I got as far as the synopsis and gave up. I bought Destiny Of The Wulf for my teenage daughter on a friend’s recommendation and, I confess, judged it mostly by the cover and the title – both had me hooked. My curiosity got the better of me and I sceptically settled into reading this unknown genre.

The plot is best left to the reader to discover so I`ll limit my comments to what stood out for me.

The characters are subtly portrayed and convincing, not only our two heroes and other key players but those on the periphery who never struck me as mere “walk- ons” to pad out the plot. The scene setting was superb yet succinct. I knew exactly what I was hearing, seeing, smelling……….without pages of preamble. Harrison doesn’t lead you by the hand, he just puts you right there in the midst of the action.

How would I rate this as a fantasy? I’ve no idea, however aren’t all novels fantasies?

How would I rate this as a teenage read? Having read many of my daughter’s teenage books I’d say it will stand its ground and meet the high expectations of younger readers looking for unpatronising adventure. I’m wholeheartedly recommending it to my fourteen year old daughter.

Destiny of the Wulf is the most refreshing book I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a long time the only downside being my shock when it ended. I was so engrossed I didn’t see it coming! I’m looking forward to book two and the development of those tantalising threads introduced in this one.
